Smoke in Storm Drain Tuesday Evening

A fire was taken care of last night inside of a storm drain by 3212 SW 26th Avenue.

Amarillo Firefighters went to investigate smoke before 8 pm flowing from the drains and discovered several drains in the area flowing with black smoke.

By accessing a large pipe, crews were able to get into the system to search for occupants.

There was no one in danger inside the pipes, but firefighters did find a rubbish fire as the source of the smoke.

Several hydrants were opened up in the area and allowed to flow into the drains, quelling the blaze.

Transients are the presumed cause of the fire, and the Amarillo Fire Marshalls office is investigating.
