Randall County Jail Expansion 30% Complete

The expansion of the Randall County Jail is reported to be 30% complete with the completion of that project now slated for this December, possibly next January.

The expansion, planned for when the jail was originally designed and built, is being driven by an increase in the Randall County population, and increased offenses requiring incarceration.

Randall County Sheriff Chris Forbis says the county finding itself in a position where someone cannot be jailed because of a lack of space is unacceptable. “I never want to get to the point where somebody’s not going to be placed in jail that needs to be in jail.”

The addition will allow for the separation of inmates for various reasons, including communicable disease and mental illness.

The Randall County Commissioners’ Court worked to fund the expansion without the need for raising taxes.
