Free Barrio Wellness Clinic Being Offered This Weekend

The next free Barrio Wellness Clinic will be taking place this Saturday, January 12th. The event will take place at the Christian Heritage Church, 900 South Nelson, from 9 am to 12 pm in the multipurpose center. This clinic is to provide free monthly medical and dental screenings for children ages 6 months and older and adults. medical screenings and treatment of short-term illnesses will be done on a first come first serve basis and no appointments needed.

The following free screenings will be offered to children and adults attending this clinic: A1c (blood sugar), weight and height, Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure, hearing, eye, anxiety/depression, and mental health. The City of Amarillo Department of Public Health will conduct a rapid HIV test and adult immunizations (flu, Tdap, Pneumococcal, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Meningitis) in their mobile clinic if requested. TTUHSC staff will administer pre-cancer colon screenings. Haven Health staff will provide free pregnancy tests.

A handwashing for germ prevention class will be held at 11:00 a.m. in English and Spanish. Deadra Carver, from the Superior HealthPlan, will have a Medicaid provider booth available. Amarillo ISD and Amarillo College staff will share information about the THRIVE program and TSI test. Amarillo ISD Migrant staff will complete a questionnaire to determine eligibility for migrant children and students. The City of Amarillo Department of Public Health staff will also share information about communicable diseases, such as lice and pink eye. Volunteers from the Whittenburg & Strange PC Law Firm and Sanborn Elementary School will serve as Spanish interpreters if needed.

The exhibitors include Texas Tech University School of Pharmacy and Prescriptions for Students, Broome Optical, Nurse-Family Partnership, the City of Amarillo Public Health, TTUHSC, Haven Health, Superior HealthPlan, Amarillo ISD Counseling Department, AISD Migrant Department, and Amarillo College. Caprock High School students will serve snacks and distribute door prize tickets and donated prizes from Enchanted Florist and Yellow City Car Care and other sources. Healthy snacks and bags are provided by Superior Health Plan, yogurt and fresh fruit by Sam’s Club, and donated bottled water. Brady Dental Group donated tubes of toothpaste and Swifty Communigraphics provided notepads.
