Jeopardy! announcer Johnny Gilbert says a part of him left the show when longtime host Alex Trebek died last month.

The 96-year-old Gilbert offered a touching tribute to Trebek in a People magazine interview published Monday.

Gilbert said he noticed that Trebek “wasn’t the usual big-smiley-face emcee.”

He said Trebek was quiet and listened to everybody and everything, describing the host as “very introspective” and “very intelligent.”

Alex Trebek died November 8th after a 20-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 80.
