Crews Working Grass Fire Near I-40 and Dowell and Indian Hills Road

6pm: The Texas A&M Forest Service showed that the fire had consumed an estimated 100 acres of grassland as of 5:00 pm is 40% contained.

7 structures were involved in the blaze.

Sheriff’s of Potter County Brian Thomas says they hope to have power back on later this evening.

 

Area Fire Crews are one scene of a grass fire that started near I40 and Dowell and Indian Hills Road.

Officials with the Sheriff’s Office have asked those living in the Indian Hills to evacuate.

The Amarillo District of the Texas Department of Transportation is telling residents who have been evacuated to go to The Church at Bushland, located at 1800 Simmons Street.

Officials with the City of Amarillo announced that officials with the Amarillo Area Office of Emergency Management are “actively engaged” in managing regional resources to combat the ongoing grass fire in the Indian Hills area.

I-40 is still open at this time. State Loop 335 is closed in both directions from 9th Avenue to Amarillo Boulevard.  State Loop 335 is also closed at Tascosa Road.

A&M officials state that “Aviation resources have been ordered to assist with suppression of the fire. Strike teams are engaged in building fire lines and protecting structures.”

Officials with Xcel Energy have been called out and asked to de-energize the area of the grass fire.

A shelter location has been established at the Church of Bushland, located at 1800 Simmons Street, with American Red Cross present.
