An Amarillo man has pled guilty in federal court on gun charges Wednesday.

52-year-old Kevin Winkle took six guns, including assault rifles and more than 200 rounds of ammunition onto Saint Mary’s Cathedral and school campus on September 9th.

Winkle told APD officers that he “had a spiritual awakening after some church shootings that had occurred,” and brought the firearms to expose security vulnerabilities and provide free instruction on improving the church’s security.

As part of the deal on the misdemeanor charge, the government dropped a felony charge of Winkle being a drug user in possession of guns.

Winkle also has to give up the guns under the agreement.

He faces up to five years in prison and three years of probation and a fine of up to $250,000.

Sentencing is set for June 11th.
