Standoff Suspect Identified

Amarillo police have identified the man involved in the standoff incident at Fleetwood and Paramount, on Thursday morning.

Police say as  Billy Trent Day ran from officers, they began searching the area. Shortly after, an APD officer located Day walking on Overlook Street near Paramount Park and attempted contact with him.

Day shot at police, before barricading himself in a storm cellar at a home.

Police heard shots coming from the cellar and all communication with the suspect stopped.

SERT and the APD Bomb Squad also responded. A little later, police used an explosive device to breach the cellar and get to the suspect. Day was found dead inside the cellar from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police say  Day had taken a woman hostage Wednesday night, and she was taken to the hospital.

During the incident, Paramount Terrace Elementary was put on lockdown, with some residents being evacuated from their homes. No officers were hurt
