Red Raiders Roll In Home Opening Doubleheader

The men’s tennis team improved to 4-0 on the year with two wins on Sunday

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech men’s tennis team collected two wins on Sunday against Lamar University and the University of New Mexico to continue their undefeated start to the 2019 spring campaign.

“I saw six guys playing together today,” head coach Brett Masi said. “We strive to ensure that each of our guys play tough. I challenged the guys to go out there and get each point and to not leave any points out on the board. They did that, and we ended up with all 11 points.”

In their first match, the Red Raiders got off to a hot start, as the doubles team of Artem Kapshuk and Matheus Leite secured the day’s first win with a 6-1 thrashing in their match. The first point of the day was won by the tandem of Justin Bloss and Bjorn Thomson, who battled their way to a 6-4 victory.

Tech continued to roll in singles play, as all six Red Raiders won their matches to complete the 7-0 sweep. Parker Wynn, who made his Lubbock debut, won the first court bout by a score of 6-0 and 6-3.

Against New Mexico, Tech seized the doubles point with the help of the experienced duo of Jackson Cobb and Tommy Mylnikov, as they rolled to a 6-3 win. Kapshuk and Leite earned their second doubles victory of the day with a 6-4 win, reigning in the first point of the match.

The singles session was dominated by players on courts 1, 3 and 5, as junior Bjorn Thomson, who returned to the McLeod Tennis Center for the first time since 2017, picked up a win in straight sets. Wynn continued his streak of success with a dominating 6-2, 6-1 win. The fourth and final point of the afternoon came from Mylnikov, who served up an ace on match point to end the day.

Tech will return to action on Saturday, January 26th, as they travel to Tallahassee, Florida to face the Florida State Seminoles.
