Red Light Cameras Gone

As of midnight, red light cameras in Amarillo will no longer be in operation.

A house bill in 2019 allowed the program to end unless a city had a contract in place, which Amarillo did.

No more photographs will be taken, but the equipment will still be in place until the company can come along and take them down.

For 15 years, the city has issued 331,556 citations, and this year 76 thousand citations were given out.

The City has seen a reduction in accidents and city officials feel the cameras have forced better and safer driving habits.

In the meantime, drivers will still see the equipment up, but no tickets will be given out.

All revenue from the red light program is mandated for traffic safety improvements
