Mayor Nelson Defends Civic Center Plan

The next phase of renovation for the Amarillo Civic Center is set to take place following a four-to-one vote during the last City Council meeting. Both during and since that vote, there has been quite a bit of discourse regarding the plan.

Mayor Ginger Nelson spoke to the media to defend the council’s decision, and why this plan is a need for the best interest of the city, with an intent to reduce taxpayers involvement.

When asked about the implications regarding taxpayers, a new Civic Center could make for a win-win situation for residents, and for tourism.

The plan to move forward now was an important one, as even a one percent raise in interest would equate to an added $15 million in costs.

The next steps from here involve a bidding process for construction, with the full renovation set to take three years to complete.
