Amarillo School Enrollment Decreasing

Amarillo ISD School enrollment has fallen 10 percent since peaking in 2015-2016 at 33,673 students.

The decrease will have a direct effect on school funding from the state.

Amarillo’s school board held a special work session on Monday to look at options addressing the loss of funding from the state.

As they lose students, AISD board members say they have too many facilities.

The board is looking at consolidating schools to save money on payroll, but nothing is set in concrete.

AISD Superintendent Doug Loomis said there are not many entities that have lost $18 million in revenue over the past two years without staff reductions. He said the district has absorbed that cost.

School officials say lower birth rates show Potter County is shrinking, and Randall Couty is growing, and that is causing a problem with deflating AISD School enrollment.
