Getting Ready To Do A Century Ride

Many of us in the Texas Panhandle are getting ready for the Texas Tumbleweed Harder Than Hell Century Ride, on September 16th.

You’ve got to nail your nutrition… Many of us underestimate the energy it takes to come out on the other side of a century event. Fuel early and often, and that means now.. Your first snack should be about 30 minutes into the ride, and focus on easily digestible carbs, such as energy bars.

Hydration, espacially in Texas heat needs to be addressed early. Drink at least one 16-to 20 ounce bottle per hour, even more if you’re thirsty. If you’re fueling with energy gels, wash them down with water. If you’re eating solid foods try an electrolite drink.

Top off your energy stores in the days before the event. Begin two to three days before, by increasing the proportion of carbs in your meals, like adding a small baked potato, and the night before the ride eat a normal meal with a slightly larger serving of carbs like chicken and rice wth an extra half or full cup of rice.
