A former Mexican police officer is now facing charges for plotting to distribute cocaine.

A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper was patrolling Saturday on I-40 in Oldham County when he was nearly rear-ended by a Ford Explorer.

The trooper pulled over the vehicle and identified the driver as Assmir Contreras-Martinez of Tucson, Arizona.

After searching the vehicle the trooper found three compartments loaded with bundles.

A total of 33 bundles were found which field tested positive for cocaine.

DEA and the Randall County Sheriff’s Office assisted the DPS in this case.

Contreras-Martinez, a former police officer in Senora, Mexico admitted to knowingly carrying illegal contraband, stating he was paid $6000 to take drugs from California to Florida because he had very little money after entering the U.S. illegally around seven months ago.

He is being held in the Randall County Jail pending trial.
