Catalytic Converter Thefts Increase In Amarillo

There’s a definite increase in catalytic converter thefts in Amarillo.

Potter County Sheriff’s officials say one is reported stolen every day. They say although it’s hard to prove they’ve been stolen and no way to trace them, there are safeguards an owner can do.

Engrave the VIN on it, or stencil it in with heat-resistant paint so you can prove it belongs to you. They also advise if you have a garage, park your vehicle in it, park in a well-lit area, and or use an anti-theft device.

Sheriff’s officials say there’s a possibility the people responsible for the thefts are going around the country stealing the converters, and some could be right here in our backyard.

If a catalytic converter is stolen here, it’s taken to a bigger city that will buy them, like Dallas or Oklahoma City.

They warn if you see someone working underneath a car and there’s no sign that they’re a mechanic, call the Potter County Sheriff’s Office
