(New Orleans, LA) — LSU is king after beating Clemson 42-25 in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game in New Orleans. Quarterback Joe Burrow passed for 463 yards and five touchdowns, and also ran for a score, as top-ranked LSU finished 15-and-0 to claim its first national title since 2007. Ja’Marr Chase hauled in nine passes for 221 yards and two TD’s in the win. Trevor Lawrence threw for 234 yards and ran for a score for third-ranked Clemson, which led 17-7 early in the second quarter. Clemson ends its season 14-and-1.
Astros Fire Luhnow, Hinch Over Sign Stealing
(Houston, TX) — The Houston Astros are parting ways with GM Jeff Luhnow and manager A.J. Hinch over a sign-stealing scandal. Astros owner Jim Crane fired both shortly after MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said the pair would be suspended for the entire 2020 season. The Astros will also give up first-and-second round draft picks the next two years and were fined a maximum five-million dollars. Major League Baseball started investigating Houston after former pitcher Mike Fiers told The Athletic the team used a video camera in center field to get signs and banged on a trash can to signal different pitches. Crane said the pair were not involved in the creation of the system but should have stopped it from happening.
Hinch Issues Apology
(Houston, TX) — Fired Astros manager A.J. Hinch issued an apology in a statement for failing to do more to stop the technology sign-stealing. Hinch said he regrets being connected to these events. Former Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow denied knowledge of the sign-stealing conspiracy. He said he is not a cheater.
