Tuesday Morning Structure Fire

Amarillo firefighters came upon a structure fire at 401 South Rusk Street, on Tuesday morning.

The first units arrived and found the single-story residence fully engulfed in flames with the fire quickly approaching the house next door.

The occupant of the house made it out safely without injury and was checked by paramedics on the scene, but refused transport to a hospital.

An Amarillo police officer helped the next-door neighbors out of their homes, then transported himself to  Northwest Texas Hospital where he was treated for smoke inhalation.

This is the third time in the last month AFD respond to this residence, and the Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

The last two fires were ruled accidental due to the occupant of the house using a makeshift wood-burning stove.
