Thursday Sports Update – Cowboys Continue Training Camp

(Oxnard, CA) — The Cowboys continue training camp action today in Oxnard, California. Rookie receiver Michael Gallup had a nice day catching the ball yesterday and looks to be in the mix for playing time this fall. Fellow wideout Tavon Austin had a nice battle one-on-one battle with cornerback Byron Jones. The preseason opens a week from today on the road versus San Francisco.

Cowboys’ Williams Gets Charges Dropped

(Oxnard, CA) — Cowboys receiver Terrance Williams is no longer facing public intoxication charges in Frisco after completing an alcohol awareness course. Williams was charged in May after his Lamborghini was found crashed into an intersection. The NFL is still investigating the incident.

Cowboys DE Gregory Returns To Field

(Oxnard, CA) — Reinstated Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory is back on the practice field. He was activated from the non-football injury list yesterday and went through team drills. Gregory missed all of last season after violating the league’s substance abuse policy for the third time. He has played just 14 games after being drafted in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Texans Continue Training Camp

(White Sulphur Springs, WV) — Pro Bowl receiver DeAndre Hopkins did not practice yesterday as he is excused for personal reasons. He’s expected to return to practice today. Quarterback DeShaun Watson looks fully healed from his torn ACL and continues running with the first-team. Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is working his way back from a knee injury.

Hall of Fame Game Kicks Off Tonight

(Canton, OH) — The NFL preseason kick off tonight with the annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The Chicago Bears will face the Baltimore Ravens. The Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony is Saturday. The Class of 2018 includes wide receivers Randy Moss and Terrell Owens, linebacker Brian Urlacher and safety Brian Dawkins.

Astros Pound Mariners

(Seattle, WA) — Marwin Gonzalez hit two solo home runs as the Astros pounded the Mariners 8-3 in Seattle. Jake Marisnick launched a two-run shot and Max Stassi tacked on a three-run blast for Houston. Dallas Keuchel fired seven innings of three-run ball to earn the win. The Astros now hold a five-game lead over the M’s and A’s atop the AL West.

Carmelo Clears Waivers, To Sign With Rockets

(Houston, TX) — Veteran forward Carmelo Anthony has cleared waivers and is set to join the Rockets on a one-year deal. Anthony was waived by the Atlanta Hawks, who acquired him from the Oklahoma City Thunder. “Melo” averaged 16.2 points last season for OKC. In other team news, the Rockets traded center Chinanu Onuaku to the Mavericks for cash yesterday.

Ohio State Coach Urban Meyer On Paid Leave Amid Abuse Investigation

(Columbus, OH) — Ohio State is placing football coach Urban Meyer on paid leave amid abuse claims filed against his former assistant. The university took the action as it investigates a report that Meyer was aware of assault allegations made against former assistant coach Zach Smith by his ex-wife in 2015. Meyer fired Smith last week, but previously denied being aware of the incident.

TCU, SMU Open Preseason Camp Today

(Fort Worth, TX) — The TCU Horned Frogs and SMU Mustangs each kick off preseason camp today. Players will get physicals, equipment and go through meetings. TCU ‘s first game is September 1st at home versus Southern. SMU visits North Texas on September 1st under new head coach Sonny Dykes.
