Safe Zone Ordinance

The Amarillo Police have finished training on a city ordinance put in place in April to reduce the number of crashes involving people in the road.

The city’s ordinance makes for safe zones around the busiest intersections,  prohibiting loitering or panhandling within 100 feet of the intersection.

Chief Martin Birkenfeld, Amarillo Police Chief says the ordinance is about safety, in that the safe zones are to prevent crashes involving people loitering or panhandling in or near the roadways

The officers are trained to recognize the safe zones in Amarillo and let residents know about the ordinance before a citation or an arrest takes place.

The ordinance helps to reduce the number of panhandlers along intersection medians within Amarillo city limits.
