Referendum Petition Not Authorized

A petition from a city committee to repeal an ordinance involving debt for the renovation of an expansion of the Amarillo Civic Center will not be submitted to the city council.

City Secretary Stephanie Coggins says the petition lacks an affidavit or oath of authenticity from those that circulated it.

The petition is opposed to issuing 260 million dollars in debt for the project.

A lawsuit challenging the plan is awaiting an October trial.

The City Charter requires that a valid petition must have all the required elements or it cannot be submitted to the Council
