Project Safe Neighborhood

Federal and Local Law Enforcement agencies came together Wednesday to talk about a new program that will be folding out to help keep neighborhoods safer.

The Program Safe Neighborhood is designed to target areas of a town that has seen a rise in crime and root out the problem.

In Amarillo, The San Jacinto and North Heights areas have seen a rise in crime in past years.

In 2017, the murder rate topped 50 per 100,000. When this program was started a little over a year ago, a 20% reduction of crime was reported in 8 months.

Since the project started earlier this month, Amarillo Police Chief Ed Drain stated that several criminals have been arrested.
