One Dead After Police Halt Pursuit And Suspect Hits Tree

After a traffic stop and police pursuit near the San Jacinto neighborhood, one man has lost his life.

Amarillo police say the death took place when the suspect’s car smashed into a tree at 9:52 near Southwest 3rd Avenue and McMasters Street.

The driver of the Ford Crown Victoria, 33-year-old Marquis Terrill Tippet, initially stopped but then sped off as the officer approached the vehicle during a traffic violation stop.

The officer pursued but stopped after seeing the suspect driving erratically.

The vehicle spun out at Southwest 3rd and Georgia, then continued going north on 4th and Alabama Street clipping a car before striking a tree 

APD says the man died at the scene.  No other injuries were reported.
