Monkeypox Virus In Amarillo

The Amarillo Department of Health is reporting its first probable case of Monkeypox.

City officials say the initial testing was done at a commercial laboratory, testing positive for orthopoxvirus.

The disease can be spread through contact with body fluids, lesions, and shared items that could be contaminated.

Monkeypox can also be spread through respiratory droplets to people in close contact after long exposure, and city officials also stress the case will remain probable because not all samples have been confirmed by the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention.

However, city officials also stress that the general public is not at risk.

The Public Health Department goes on to say that any suspected or confirmed case in Potter or Randall Counties should be reported at 806-378-6321, and for more information, people are asked to visit the Amarillo Alerts Website
