Man Sentenced For 2022 Amarillo Motel Murder

64-year-old Ronald Austin has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the the 2022 murder of 57-year-old Gerald Chisolm.

The shooting happened March 13, 2022 when – according to records – the two men had been arguing during a day-long cookout at the Cowboy Motel on Amarillo Boulevard. Austin was in a room with the door open as Chisolm spoke to him from outside.

At some point, Austin grabbed a gun and shot Chisolm who ran. Austin chased him, firing five more times, all five bullets striking Chisolm in the back. He died at the scene from the gunshot wounds.

Austin would say later at trial the victim was known to carry a gun, though no weapon was ever recovered.
