Jupiter, Saturn To Comprise Christmas Star, Visible on Winter Solstice

Stargazers are in for a gift this holiday season.

In what’s known as the Christmas Star, the two biggest planets in our solar system will be the closest they have been in the night’s sky in nearly 800 years.

Jupiter and Saturn will be closest on December 21st — the winter solstice — which is the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

According to NBC News, the last time two planets were so close was in 1623, but that was Jupiter and Venus.

However, the last time Jupiter and Saturn were so close, and observable without a telescope, was 1226.
