Head On Crash Kills Four On US Highway 87; Alcohol Involved

A wreck on US Highway 87 has taken the lives of four people, two of whom were under the age of 10 years old.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says that at  11:25 p.m. Saturday night an eyewitness saw a 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche driven, driven by 35-year-old Mario Alberto,  of Amarillo, was traveling south in the northbound lanes and crashed head-on with a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro, driven by 34-year-old Trey Tipton of Dumas.

Alberto was believed to have been under the influence of alcohol.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Gary Jackson. Two passengers, a five- and nine-year-old, in the Camaro were also killed in the crash

A 13-year-old passenger in the Camaro suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to an Amarillo hospital.

The crash remains under investigation by the DPS.
