City officials say there is no plan at this time to implement the Drought Contingency Plan.
While the city has exceeded its daily water consumption, Assistant City Manager Floyd Hartman points out Amarillo is capable of producing 80 million gallons or more of water per day, but says that’s not necessary at this time. He adds there is no concern for fire protection or water safety.
The Drought Contingency Plan is in place to help conserve water when rainfall totals are low. The Amarillo plan is generally triggered when reservoir levels drop below 60 percent. At least reading, the current level is nearing 71 percent.
Hartman said the City is well ahead of the water curve, including a 50-year plan on water supply conservation.
