Friday Sports Update – Tech Outlasts Texas In Big 12 Tourney

(Kansas City, MO) — Keenan Evans led the Red Raiders with 25 points as Texas Tech folded Texas 73-69 in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals in Kansas City. Texas Tech led by seven at halftime and let the Longhorns come within a point in the second half but never gave up the lead. Jarrett Culver added 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Red Raiders advance to Friday’s semifinals. The return of Mo Bamba and 29 points from Jacob Young wasn’t enough for the Longhorns. Texas is now 19-and-14 and is hoping for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. West Virginia knocked off Baylor 78-65 and will face the Red Raiders in the semis today. TCU lost to Kansas State 66-64 in overtime. KSU will face Kansas in the other semifinal today. Texas A&M Falls To Alabama

(St. Louis, MO) — Texas A&M’s run in the SEC Tournament is over already. The Aggies fell to Alabama 71-70 in St. Louis last night. T.J. Starks scored 23 points in defeat. They’ll learn their postseason fate on Sunday.

(Surprise, AZ) — Preston Beck nailed the go-ahead home run in the eighth inning as the Rangers downed the White Sox 5-4 in Surprise, Arizona. Destin Hood tied the game with a solo shot in the seventh for Texas. Juan Centeno also went deep in the win. The Rangers face the Reds today.

(Kissimmee, FL) — Jon Kemmer drilled the go-ahead two-run single as the Astros defeated the Braves 6-4 in Kissimmee, Florida. Derek Fisher and Tyler White each homered for Houston in the win. The ‘Stros are 10-and-5 in Grapefruit League action and face the Cardinals today.

Fort Worth Elementary Kids To Compete In Houston Chess Championship

(Fort Worth, TX) — Some Fort Worth elementary students will compete in the Texas State Scholastic Chess Championship this weekend. The chess team from Kirkpatrick Elementary has already earned a number of trophies. It’ll get to play against the best in the tournament in Houston. The chess team, made up of kids from second grade through fifth grade, was cheered on by schoolmates, who lined up in the hallways as the team left.
