Fire Chief Dies

Fritch Volunteer Fire Chief Zeb Smith has died while battling a structure Tuesday morning.

Fire officials say Smith died as a result of a heart attack.

According to a press release from the City of Borger/Hutchinson County Office of Emergency Management, Chief Smith was the first on the scene of this fire, demonstrating his unwavering commitment and service to the Fritch community.

Chief Smith was given medical assistance at the scene and transported quickly to Golden Plains Community Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be announced at a later date.

Fritch Volunteers have been battling recent fires including the Windy Deuce Fire that has burned 144-thousand acres and is just 55 percent contained.
