If you work in an open office space, as I do, you’ve probably noticed how many people use headphones, ear buds or air pods at their desks. I use them, not always, but often. Well, it appears that many headphone wearing workers (like me) have ulterior motives. We don’t want to talk to others. That’s according to German researchers, who found that half of us wear headphones for only one reason; avoidance. I am absolutely guilty, are you? Sometimes, I just need to cut out the distractions and focus, so the headphones go on my head.
Also, a different group of researchers found that over a quarter of us use our phones to avoid talking to others. I am guilty again, but only on rare occasions (like when I see someone at the store who will talk forever if I don’t act busy). Using the phone to deflect conversation is also quite risky because….WHAT IF IT RINGS?!!
So, do you use distractions to avoid talking to others? Please take our KGNC Instapoll and let us know. And, thank you!
