Dalhart Student Killed In School Parking Lot

A student has died after a firearm was accidentally discharged in a vehicle at a Dalhart Independent School District parking lot.

Superintendent Jeff Byrd stated that a student not enrolled in the district went to the high school at lunch and picked up three students when the firearm went off in the parking lot.

All campuses were placed in lockdown and state and local law enforcement immediately responded to the scene and were able to determine there was no threat to any campus or facility.

Dalhart High School was released early at 2 p.m.and the girl’s basketball team decided not to participate in the playoff game against Idalou,  all other athletic activities were canceled.
