Many were surprised and saddened with the announcement of the closing of the Thompson Park swimming pool.
The city of Amarillo cited safety concerns and the cost of maintenance as the main reasons the 87-year-old pool was shut down.
With the help of a community group that includes Michael Fox Reverend Herman Moore, Victor Leal, and Mildred Darden along with others and the city of Amarillo the groundwork for a new swimming facility is taking shape to replace the pool.
In a meeting that took place Wednesday with city officials funding, the type of pool and the location were discussed.
But the first step will be an outreach effort to the city as a whole to see exactly what type of aquatic center is wanted and needed in the north side community.
