CoA Discusses Crime Statistics At Community Solutions Meeting

The City of Amarillo held a Community Solutions Meeting Tuesday to talk about crime statistics for 2021.

Amarillo Police Department Chief Martin Birkenfeld said that the biggest issue the city is seeing has been the recent string of shootings.

So far in 2021, Amarillo has had 7 more homicides than 2020 and 10 more than 2019.

Chief Birkenfeld about how they are handling the increased shootings.

The Chief also said that having the Neighborhood Patrol Units has helped with communication between the community and officers which has helped reduce crime in some areas.

Another issue that is continuing to raise in our community is the number of drunk driving and DWI crashes with 213 this year.
