City Honors Rick Husband on the Anniversary of His Passing

The City of Amarillo announced honored astronaut Rick Husband on February 1st, the 20th anniversary of his passing.

The city held a public ceremony with city officials and friends of Husband on Wednesday at Rick Husband International Airport at 10 am.

Husband was the mission commander onboard the Columbia space shuttle and one of the 7 astronauts who died as it sustained damage upon reentry.

Susan Esler, a childhood friend of Rick and fellow Amarillo High grad from 1975, spoke about how she thinks Rick would have felt about the affair.

A wreath was placed at the feet of the statue in the airport, adorned by Husband’s favorite Bible verse.
