City Councilman Howard Smith Honored For Service

The Amarillo City Council honored outgoing Place 4 councilman Howard Smith during the June 27th meeting. He has served three terms and 51 days, noting that in that time, “I have encouraged economic development. I love Amarillo. That’s why I served.”

Smith, emotional at times, thanked previous members and offered memories made during his service while also reminding the new mayor and council members they now represent Amarillo.

“He seconded me more than a few times so I wouldn’t be left hanging,” said Mayor Stanley who served two years on the city council with Smith. “He’s been patient, kind, instructive; a good mentor along the way.”

Les Simpson defeated Claudette Smith in the June 24th runoff election to replace Smith (no relation).
