City Council Discusses Proposed Tax Rate Increase

During a special meeting of the Amarillo City Council, Members voted 4-1 on a proposed tax increase.

The increase would be a total of 22% or 48 cents of the 19% that residents actually pay from their overall taxes which is 3.5%.

Mayor Ginger Nelson explains more.

The city says that Amarillo still has one of the lowest tax rates compared to cities our size.

The Proposed tax rate will go before the Citizens of Amarillo to be voted on November 2nd if approved by the Council on August 13th.

If voted down by residence the tax rate will go to the voter approved $0.443 per $100 valuation.
