September 24, 2024 6:13PM CDT
Just after 12:30 Tuesday afternoon, Amarillo Police stopped to check on a man reported to be walking in traffic on Amarillo Boulevard near Western. While an officer was talking with the man, he attacked the officer.
Citizens then stopped to assist the officer. As more APD officers arrived, the man ran but was caught just a short distance away where he was taken into custody.
That suspect and the officer were taken to an area hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Charges are pending and that case is being investigated by the APD Violent Crimes Unit.
The Amarillo Police Department and Chief Birkenfeld wish to express their thanks to those citizens that stopped to provide assistance.
