KGNC Celebrates Black History Month.
Bessie Coleman (1892- 1926) had to go to France to earn her pilot’s license because flying schools in the United States denied her entry.
In 1922, she became the world’s first Black woman licensed as a pilot.
She returned to the U.S. and made her living as a barnstorming and performing aerial tricks.
Tragically, she was killed in 1926 at the age of 34, during rehearsal of an aerial show.
Also on this day 1n 1940 Hattie McDaniel became the first African-American to win an Academy Award for her betrayal of Mammie in 1939’s Gone With the Wind.
