Amarillo School Enrollments Bounce Back

Area school districts and some Pre-Schools are seeing kindergarten enrollment starting to bounce back after a year of decline.

Some day schools and the Amarillo Independent School District saw a big drop in Pre-K and kindergarten enrollments in 2020.

While it is too soon to say whether kindergarten enrollment will bounce back fully this year, Schools say numbers are getting back to pre-pandemic times

For some, that means accelerated learning and the schools have hired interventionists who can work with the younger children to bring them up to speed to make up for the time and learning loss from last year.

April Brownlee AISD communications says the district indicated it had very few kindergarten parents who requested to retain their child. “Most parents have expressed wanting to keep forward progress to the next grade level,”.

AISD says it will be investing Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds into closing achievement gaps and hire experienced tutors who will provide additional support to students.
