Amarillo Police Urging Public To Drive Safely

Amarillo Police are citing three main reasons for fatal auto crashes: Speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, and drunk driving.

Since the beginning of the year, 157 people have been arrested for drunk driving, and 720 people for not wearing seatbelts. Amarillo Police have also written 134 citations for improperly restrained during the same time period.

Officers are regularly assigned to work in areas where most traffic crashes happen and in school zones increasing safety of children.

Chief Martin Birkenfeld says the Department is going to continue to do their part in reducing crashes and deaths, but they need the help of the community.

He’s asking that drivers slow down, wear seatbelts, and stop drinking and driving.
