Amarillo Police are expanding their access for area law enforcement to Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives National Integrated Ballistic Information Network..
Under the program has been developed to prevent and help solve other violent gun crimes.
The NIBIN helps law enforcement by uploading ballistic evidence into a national database of ballistic evidence maintained by the ATF.
Amarillo Police received a grant in 2018 to put together the program. Equipment was installed and became fully functional in 2019. This week the APD offered its services of uplloading the evidence into the NIBIN to all law enforcement agencies in the Panhandle.
Amarillo has the only NIBIN equipment between Dallas and Denver and Oklahoma and Albuquerque and Oklahoma City.
Just recently, Amarillo assisted the Abilene PD with uploading ballistic evidence from several violent gun crimes and generated leads on a homicide and several aggravated assaults.
