Amarillo’s City Council has awarded 14 million dollars to the APD for technical equipment.

The equipment includes a camera, records, and a digital evidence management system.

It will allow APD to combine technologies into a singular system to improve efficiency in both patrol and case filing for investigators.

The money allows for a nine-year contract with Axon Enterprises, which will provide products, services, and technical.

APD Chief Martin Birkenfeld says he’s happy with the award because it”ll create a long-term sustainable plan for digital evidence storage, as well as the cameras and the systems that operate that.

Birkenfeld also says the new equipment also allows for increased officer and public safety.

The funding comes from general funds and will be paid out over nine years.
