Amarillo Hosts Roundtable to Discuss Civic Center Upgrades, Related Lawsuit

The Amarillo City Council previously announced that they will move forward with the Civic Center renovation, a decision that has some in the area scratching their heads.

The council voted 4-1 on May 24 to issue $260 million in tax and revenue notes to fund the work, which comes after 61% of Amarillo residents voted against a bond proposal for the project in the November 2020 election.

One local man has decided to take it upon himself to try and correct this by suing the City of Amarillo.

Alex Fairly filed the lawsuit earlier this year, and at a recent round table discussing the new Civic Center plans he mentioned some of the issues he had with the council’s decision.

While Mr. Fairly says he doesn’t feel like a representative speaking on behalf of other residents, he also says the community response has largely been positive.

Above all else he emphasized that it was more about civic duty than the Civic Center.
