Amarillo Goes To Court

An Austin judge has ruled that a case filed by the City of Amarillo to let it issue debt for a new city hall and a case banning issuing the debt will be tried in Amarillo.

The City filed the suit on Tuesday, in Austin because its attorneys and the Attorney Generals’ office are there and the court system has the experience handling this sort of case.

Craig Gaultier filed a lawsuit declaring that issuing the debt now goes against the city charter and Texas law.

He argues that the city is restricted from issuing the debt for three years because voters turned down a Civic Center development plan that included replacing City Hall.

City attorney Paul Trahan says that Gaultiere has presented the city with a petition calling for a November election.to decide the timing of issuing debt as though the projects are different.
