UPDATE: Amarillo Fire Department Respond To HazMat Chlorine Leak At Plains Dairy
UPDATE 2:50 pm – All roads are open near Plains Dairy following this morning’s emergency situation.
The Amarillo Fire Department responded to a hazardous material situation at the Plains Dairy in Amarillo.
At 9:30 a.m. crews were sent to the plant at 3rd and Taylor due to a chlorine gas leak inside the building.
Employees were evacuated and seven have been hospitalized, the injuries are believed to be non-critical
Chlorine gas is used to clean containers at the building and Kyle Joy with the AFD says it is possible that the chlorine gas was mixed with something else.
The Amarillo Area Office of Emergency Management has initiated a full EOC activation for the situation and there is no danger to the general public.
Fire crews will stay on the scene to monitor the situation and TxDOT has closed US 287 and Taylor Street from the highway to 10th Avenue. It is unknown how long this closure will be in place Northeast 3rd to Fillmore is closed as well.
