Amarillo Fire Department and Texas Parks and Wildlife To Participate In Prescribed Fires Training.

During Tuesday Afternoon’s Council Meeting, a contract was approved that would allow the Amarillo Fire Department crews to prescribe fire training at Palo Duro Canyon.

Prescribed fire activities exercised through this contract will be performed under the supervision of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in compliance with state regulations and best practices.

Teaming up together will help keep the fuels that feed fire down and manage the property.

Deputy Fire Chief Sam Baucom

Prescribed fire program provides several environmental benefits, including a reduction in the available fuels during a wildfire, reducing the number of structures threatened during a wildland-urban interface fire, restoration of the Plains ecosystem to native grasses and forbs, healthy re-growth of vegetation for grazing, and an increase in essential wildlife such as pollinators and foragers.
