AFD Is Ready To Change It Up

The Amarillo Fire Department is rolling out changes in its hiring process.

Starting January 2022, AFD will be starting a new fire academy to train applicants to become state-certified firefighters and basic level Emergency Medical Technicians.

Candidates can get through the program, and earn their pay simultaneously as they earn certifications.

Previously, the Department would hire those with certifications, but this practice has led to a shortage of firefighters in the area.

AFD has not been fully staffed since 2019, and overtime expenses are a big concern because of this.

This change allows a direct hiring process for training and certifying candidates from the local Amarillo area.

Hiring this way will also open up further opportunities for underrepresented communities.

Interested candidates must be between 18 and 35, and with a high school degree or GED.
